Redzman

Introduction
This was the first collaboration of the project which, in comparison to the others, gave me the most insight about myself as a collaborator. The presented track is the result of two, eight-hour recording sessions plus a six-hour, solitary mixing session. Due to the prolonged progression of the vocal material, maintaining a level or patience as well as achieving an unpressured working environment proved to be crucial throughout this collaboration. By the end of the sixteen hours, we had managed to record the entire structure of the track as well as doubled vocals and adlibs throughout the first verse and chorus.

Video of Session

This is a short clip from a two-hour video recording that I took of the session. As mentioned in my report, the workflow of this session was incredibly slow because there was very little vocal material prepared. This clip is a short example of what happened throughout the entire session and shows the difficulties we had during our collaboration, i.e. Redz struggling to write small amounts of material and my inability to make valuable suggestions to the content.

Dirty Doggz

Introduction

This was a big contrast in dynamic from my first collaboration. Dakari’s vocal preparation of the entire track meant that the session was driven more by achieving the quality of recordings rather than building a foundation. This session was a staple learning curve in my project. Due to Dakari’s past experience, the session was incredibly fast paced which, for the first time, challenged my ability to work under the pressure of an artist in the recording environment. This experience was a big step for me as an engineer and ended up being a very successful collaboration.

DEELITE

Introduction

Still in-progress, my discussions with Deelite make this collaboration incredibly valuable. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, myself and Deelite have not yet been able to meet face-to-face and have therefore relied on video calls and facebook messenger as a means to collaborate. (The audio below) demonstrates the final structure of the track along with the template vocals recorded by Deelite on his mobile. Due to decisions made after these recordings, the vocals are short of 8-bars in each verse which will be introduced as soon as Deelite gains access to a recording studio.

Nile

Introduction

During the COVID-19 crisis, collaborating with vocal artist proved to be a challenge as isolation prevented any face-to-face meetings. Therefore, to continue my research I reached out to a handful of tracker producers like myself, one of which was Nile, who responded with a lot of enthusiasm. This Track is a result of a Logic project being sent back and forth over the course of three days. Initially starting off as a simple 130bpm Samba idea, this track progressed into a 140bpm Grime instrumental.

AMR

Introduction

This track is a collaboration between myself and three very differently experienced vocal artists, all of which I had not met before that day. Of all the collaborations, the one that stuck out in terms of enjoyment and energy was definitely Adam, Mozer and Reckz (AMR). The spontaneity of this collaboration gave the entire session a sense of informality which resulted in an incredibly natural and unpressured environment. This relaxed atmosphere, combined with AMR’s impressive ability to prepare brand-new material in minutes meant we were able to record the entire track in under four hours.

B.Yaks

Introduction

Due to clashing schedules I was only able to get Yaks in the studio for at most 2 hours which didn’t give this collaboration the best odds. During this time, we managed to record an idea for the chorus and half of the first verse. There was nothing particularly significant about this collaboration, however, communication and work flow came very naturally during the session and had we had more time, this could have progressed into a successful collaboration.
